Ensembles, Choirs & Orchestras

We recognise how valuable ensemble experience can be in the development of musical skills, offering enrichment for players on both a musical and personal level. It allows players to grow in confidence and to experience team work within a musical framework which encourages achievements in both musical and social skills.

We aim to provide young players in Cornwall with the opportunity of playing in an ensemble from the very outset of their musical career. There are currently 23 area ensembles and 13 County ensembles covering a wide range of disciplines, standards and styles.

Each ensemble has its own identity both musically and socially, which is evident through concerts, performance venues, repertoire, the yearly calendar and ensemble wear/ uniform. There is however, often collaboration with other ensembles, with players being involved in joint concerts, project-based work and festival performances.

Most ensembles recruit their members through invitation, recommendation and application, although the Cornwall Youth Orchestra, Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra and the Cornwall Youth Jazz Orchestra players are selected through an auditioning process.

All our staff work closely with school based ensembles, either directing or working alongside the school music director.

For membership of one or more ensembles there is a single termly coaching fee of £22.00. Subsidies for Free School Meal pupils and discounts for annual membership fees are detailed in the Ensemble Membership forms found below.

County Orchestras and workshops are charged on an events basis and parents will be notified when booking the event.
